General practice can be tough. Fifteen‑minute consults. Complex needs and the pressure to hold everything in that short space of time.
We won’t pretend our appointments aren’t 15 minutes. They are.
What makes the difference here is what sits around those 15 minutes.
Job Description
Kāore koe e mahi mokemoke | You are not working alone
At Te Manu Toroa, care doesn’t start and end with the GP. You’ll be part of a genuinely integrated team where care is shared and support is available when it’s needed.
You’ll work alongside:
Health Improvement Practitioners providing brief mental health interventions
Health Coaches supporting behaviour change over time
Community and advanced practice nurses providing care beyond the clinic
Embedded Mental Health & Addictions services
Whānau Ora and social support kaimahi helping whānau navigate services
Pēpi Ora / Well Child Tamariki Ora teams supporting pēpi and whānau
Dental, dietitian and long‑term condition programmes (diabetes, cardiac, respiratory)
This means you don’t have to solve everything in one consult — and you don’t carry the weight alone.
Mō tēnei tūranga | About the Role
This is a GP role grounded in kaupapa Māori and the Tūāpapa system of care, where relationships matter and care is collective.
You’ll provide high‑quality primary care while working closely with a multidisciplinary team to support whānau beyond the consultation room. There is space to practise thoughtfully, collaborate across services, and contribute to service development.
Building strong, trusting relationships with patients is central to this role. These partnerships support shared decision‑making and enable patients and whānau to work towards their health goals. You will practise with professional integrity and a strong commitment to health equity.
Flexible employment options are available.
Desired Skills and Experience
He aha tāu kawe mai |What you bring
You are a vocationally registered GP (or eligible to practise in Aotearoa New Zealand) seeking a way of working that feels more sustainable and meaningful.
You bring experience and confidence in general practice, with scope or special interest areas that strengthen collective care — such as women’s health or complex, long‑term conditions.
You value equity, are open to kaupapa Māori approaches, and are comfortable working as part of a team where care and responsibility are shared.
You are confident working within a tikanga Māori framework and understand, or are open to understanding, Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its application in healthcare.
Ko wai mātou | About us
Te Manu Toroa was established in 1997 to provide a Kaupapa Māori model of health care for Māori in the Mai Ngā Kurī-a-Whārei ki Ōtamarākau rohe (Tauranga, Mount Maunganui, Katikati and Te Puke – the Western Bay of Plenty). We are a member of Ngā Mataapuna Oranga PHO, a Whānau Ora collective focused on improving whānau health and wellbeing across Tauranga Moana.
We provide holistic care through our two GP clinics and a wide range of services. Our purpose is to support our community to be healthy, confident, empowered, and active contributors to their whānau and communities. Guided by our indigenous Tūāpapa system of care, our goal is to ensure accessible, affordable, comprehensive, and integrated health services for the people of the Western Bay of Plenty.
